Johnny Winter

Eric Wed, April 26, 2006 - 2:27 PM by Eric

hey group,
A couple of days ago I bought a cd of Johnny Winter's "Progressive Blues Experiment" recording and I love it, great playing and wonderful energy. This is the best stuff I've ever heard of his.
It was recorded live at the legendary "Vulcan Gas Company" in '67 but was originally released in '69.
I've wanted to hear this record for many years, fascinated by the legend of it.
For many years, I've only owned 2 Johnny Winter albums, "Winter" and "Johnny Winter and Live".
The Live was great, though I got bored with it at a time when I could hardly listen to any one that wasn't a Howlin' Wolf, Muddy, Buddy, the Kings, Robert Johnson etc, you know the phase.
I eventually sold the Live record, but kept the Winter because it was more interesting.
Some tracks on it I still like after all these years, but for the most part, I get bored with it.
The Progressive Blues album is awesome, it cooks, it grooves and wails. I'm enjoying it more and more each time I play it.

Yea, I grew up on the "white boy blues" my friends older brothers fed me. Still my favorite. For a fairly obscure treat in this genre check out a band called Cactus, they had a few albums in the 70's. Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice are a killer rhythm section that Jeff Beck adopted when Cautus split up.

Yeah, I've heard of Cactus, but never heard the music.
I'm a Jeff Beck fan, but when I purchased a copy of "Beck, Bogart, and Appice" I was shocked at what a crappy record it was. Man, I skipped through each track all the way, and then took it straight back and traded it for another record. Whew! What a stinker. Totally unlistenable.

Cactus rocks. Their version of Parchman Farm will shake the fillings out of your teeth. Maybe a little...aggressive for some blues lovers though

I liked the Beck, Bogart, & Appice record. Another trio around the same time was West (Leslie), Bruce (Jack), and Laing (Corky). I liked their debut too. It's been twenty years since I heard it, so I might not feel the same way now, but I dug it back then.
While we're in the neighborhood: why doesn't Eric Clapton play rhythm guitar anymore??? Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan were phenomenal RHYTHM players, and it added a great drive to their soloing. Eric used to play rhythm---in Cream he had to--but now he goes the B. B. route and just plays fills. Freddie King was a helluva rhythm player too. (Saw him in Nashville one night when he was supposed to open forThe J. Geils Band but they cancelled; rather than get a refund, I went and saw Freddie play a long, awesome set.)

I like the Nothing but the Blues CD from Winter with Muddy Waters band. He then returned the favor producing the Hard Again, I'm a king bee albums for Muddy. Those are great, and showed Winter in his prime, although the focus is on the other players, they're stellar. His Alligator output is not half-bad either. It's a pity to see him now, he can barely walk and his show resents it.

Sad to hear that! Johnny Winter is one of my favourites. Listening right now to his version of 'Highway 61 Revisited'; takes all my blues away.

That is sooo funny. I just mentioned this ablum in a response to your post in Hendrix Lives

Where did you find that CD version? When I first started playing guitar, my buddy and I, who both played sitar as well, wore this album out. I look for it at EVERY used record store I find.
